AirServer is available as a dedicated hardware device, AirServer Connect, or as software that runs on a Mac, Windows PC, Xbox, or Surface Hub. Both let you mirror screens from iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, Chromebook, and Windows devices using AirPlay, Google Cast, and Miracast.

The main differences are in features, deployment, and licensing.

Hardware vs. software

AirServer Connect is a small dedicated device you plug into a TV, projector, or display via HDMI or USB-C. It runs a custom operating system built specifically for screen mirroring, so nothing else runs on it and it stays ready to receive connections. The software editions install on an existing computer, which runs AirServer alongside its other tasks.

Licensing

The software editions require a license. AirServer Connect does not. See Licensing overview for details on how software licenses work.

Features only on AirServer Connect

  • Guest Hotspot. Connect broadcasts its own Wi-Fi network for guest devices, so visitors can mirror without joining your main network.
  • Device Management. A dedicated web interface accessed on the local network to configure and manage the device.
  • Cloud Management. Manage the device remotely from a web interface, including across multiple locations.
  • Digital Signage. Display custom content, backgrounds, or web-based signage when no one is mirroring.
  • Livestreaming. Share the main display with viewers in other rooms, without an internet connection.
  • Moderator. Approve, hide, mute, or disconnect participants from a dedicated web interface. AirServer Windows Desktop Edition supports a lighter version of Moderator Mode through the quick settings, but the full experience is available only on Connect.
  • Google Cast app-based casting. Cast content from apps like YouTube, Spotify, Disney+ using the Cast button, in addition to standard Google Cast mirroring. The software editions support Google Cast mirroring but not app-based casting from within apps.
  • AirPlay 2 (Connect 3 only). Multi-room audio streaming and improved stream stability. Previous Connect generations and the software editions support the standard AirPlay protocol.
  • BYOM (Bring Your Own Meeting). With the AirServer Connect Button accessory, you can route room AV equipment to your own laptop for video conferencing.

Features on both Connect and the software editions

  • Screen mirroring via AirPlay, Google Cast, and Miracast
  • AirPlay media streaming (Apple apps and third-party apps with the AirPlay button)

Which one is right for you?

  • AirServer Connect is best for meeting rooms, classrooms, and any setup where you want a plug-and-play device dedicated to screen mirroring, with no host computer to maintain.
  • The software editions are best for turning an existing Mac, Windows PC, Xbox, or Surface Hub into a mirroring receiver, particularly for home use, single-user scenarios, or environments where you already have a computer connected to the display.
